The Breadfruit Advantage
One of the most unique features about the Altilis Beauty product line is that all of our products contain breadfruit! However, one of the most common questions we are asked after explaining this fact is: “what is breadfruit?” Seeing as breadfruit is not a common food source in North America it’s no wonder that most people are not yet familiar with this amazing crop. There are so many social, economical and environmental benefits of breadfruit that we are positive that you’ll be hearing a lot more about it in the years to come!
Breadfruit has long existed as a staple food crop in the Pacific Islands. It is an excellent source of carbohydrates, antioxidants, calcium, carotenoids, fibre, iron, magnesium, omega 3, omega 6, protein, vitamin c and much more! Talk about a superfood! Now, many scientist are predicting that breadfruit could be a solution to the world’s hunger problem. This is mainly due to the fact that it’s easy to grow, easy to maintain, resistant to drought, and produces a high yield. In fact, one breadfruit tree can feed a family of 4 for more than 50 years!
In the past, issues with transportation have limited the importation of breadfruit to many parts of the world. Dr. Susan Murch and her team at The University of British Columbia developed propagation techniques that overcame transportation challenges, paving the way for research on all of the possible uses of the breadfruit plant. So far, researchers have discovered ways to use breadfruit to make gluten-free flour, hummus, beer and pies. The possibilities are endless! So how does Altilis Beauty fit into this picture? Well, through her own research, our CEO found a way to extract the powerful, antioxidant and protective compounds of the breadfruit flower to create a line of revolutionary skincare products!
Interestingly enough, our breadfruit ingredient that we use in our products is extracted from breadfruit flowers that come to our lab straight from rural communities in Samoa! Our CEO Kenna has partnered with a collaborator in Samoa and the micro farmers in his village to collect breadfruit flowers from local breadfruit trees. By partnering with these communities, we are able to increase the value of the breadfruit food crop by providing them with export opportunities - creating economic growth for their community. Additionally, by using the breadfruit flowers, we are preserving the natural integrity of the food crop which helps to preserving the environment.
We feel very fortunate that we have the opportunity to work with these communities in Samoa to create green, sustainable, and socially responsible products. As our company continues to grow and the production needs of Altilis Beauty increases, we will continue to look to these micro farmers to assist us on our journey.
