Sun Protection Methods You Can Count On

Protecting your skin from the sun’s rays isn’t just about wearing sunscreen (although it is EXTREMELY important). There are many additional things you could, and should be doing to protect your skin from the sun this summer. Here are some of our top tips:

Up Your Antioxidants
Eating antioxidant rich foods such as blueberries, dark chocolate, kale, red cabbage and beets, will all contribute to reducing the effects of the sun’s rays. As we discussed in one of our recent blog posts, antioxidants help to scavenge free radicals that form due to UV radiation. Additionally, by using antioxidant-rich skincare products such as our Complete Skincare System, you will be providing your skin with an extra dose of antioxidants that it needs!

Avoid Peak Hours
The sun’s rays are at its strongest during the peak hours of the day. Try altering your outdoor routine to avoid the hours between 10am and 4pm. One helpful tip: most weather station websites contain a UV index in their daily forecast to help you determine the level of caution you should take while outside.

Pick A Shady Spot
Instead of opting for a spot on the beach that’s in full sun, pick a shady spot instead. Not only will the shade help to protect you from the sun’s rays, but it is also much cooler in the shade. This is a win-win in our books - helping to keep temperatures manageable for you and your family during the hot summer months. However, keep in mind that shade doesn’t always mean that you’re fully protected from the sun’s rays, so make sure that you’re combining this with  our other methods!

Wear Protective Clothing
Wearing a long sleeve shirt and pants will go a long way to protecting your skin from the sun’s rays. Choose tightly woven clothing as it protects against UV rays better than lightly woven clothing. A good rule of thumb is that if you hold your clothing up to light and you can see through it then it is not woven tightly enough to protect you from the sun’s rays. Also, don’t forget that your eyes need protection too! Make sure that you wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection.

Wear Sunscreen
Even though we’re focusing on other important ways to protect your skin from the sun, it’s very important to remember that these methods should be used in conjunction with sunscreen. Regardless of it is sunny, cloudy, rainy or snowing, applying sunscreen to your face (and the rest of your body) every day is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself. Make sure that you’re taking the time to apply your sunscreen properly. When applying sunscreen, you should make sure to let it sit for at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun. It’s also important to remember to re-apply every couple of hours to ensure that your skin is protected the entire time you’re outside.
